I promised the kids a trip to the Falls at McCormick's Creek State Park. It is just about five miles from our house. We had my nephew Jared with us.
It is a little bit of a hike down to the falls. We parked and walked along the road and then down the trail to the falls overlook. They have recently put in stairs and that makes it easier to get down to the overlook. Near the overlook is a set of older stairs that are pretty steep. Once you get down those you are at the creek and can see the falls. The water level is really low and the falls seem to be at about half their usual flow. It is strange to see it considering how much rain we had at the beginning of summer. We found a spot to set towels etc and and the kids went right in the water.
Some of the rocks were really slippery and I made everyone keep their shoes on. This is Gavin right below the falls.
Here is Maddie in the water. It was really cold water.
I don't think Abby had as much fun as everyone else. It was hard to see how deep the water went and in some places it was pretty deep. Gavin was tall enough for the deepest part but the girls were not.
Lookit me Momma! I'm the Little Mermaid!
There is a shelf near the waterfall so you can climb up behind it. This is Maddie underneath/behind the waterfall.
Maddie finally got brave and sat on the rocks and in the water.
Gavin couldn't be outdone by his little sister. Abby didn't want to be near the waterfall. She spent most of her time collecting leaves and sticking them on a stick to make a *leaf bouquet*.
Jared wanted to head down stream so we climbed back up the stairs. The kids wanted to go to the overlook so we went there. The overlook is newer and gives you a fantastic view of the creek area.
Here is the view...it is a long way down.
We did a little mini hike down stream. I think by this point we were all a little tired and ready to leave. The water was slower here and the rocks were really mossy. After a few stumbles we headed back.
The kids wanted to see the nature center and we arrived just in time to catch the end of a presentation on turtles. They had two small Eastern Spiny Softshell turtles. The kids got to touch them and ask questions.
We spent time looking around the nature center. Here Maddie is putting together a puzzle.
Abby found the puppets and stuffed animals and was putting on a play.
After the Nature Center we walked over the the Camp Store and concession area. We all had some ice cream as a nice snack and then headed home. Everyone seemed like they had fun and is tired this evening.
